Last year I had a lot of fun sharing some of my close-up images of paintings at the Centre Pompidou and many of you enjoyed playing a game of “Guess the Artist“. A few days ago I darted up to New York for a day of city-fun with one of my best friends. We were not planning on visiting any of the museums, but that is what I love about MoMA – it is irresistible. And soon we found ourselves lost in the Early Modern Art galleries.
Photographing works of art up close has become a preferred method for me to enjoy museums; I get a chance to zero in on a small portion of an overwhelmingly complex work and really study the layers of paint, grasp the artist’s unique stroke. So there I was in MoMA capturing details of some of my favorite paintings completely lost and content in my own world. Now it’s your chance to be mesmerized! Though you all did so well last time, I’ve tried to make it a bit more challenging.
Here’s how to play: Below are 10 works of art currently on view at MoMA New York. Leave your guesses in a comment below and next week I’ll share the work of art in full and reveal the answers. Bonne chance!
Can you guess which artist completed the following works of art? Share your answers below!

Is 5 a Dutch Master, a detail of a drinking cup? Maybe Vermeer? And 10 Degas? It’s. A nice quiz
Not quite! They are all Modern Masters.

5. Brancusi

7. Magritte
8. Brucke
9. Seurat

Very close!
Even though I was making an educated guess, I would have bet even money that #8 was Brucke, Kirchner or someone from Der Blaue Reiter –but I see now I would have lost money.
wow, this is hard! I can only guess at the super-iconic ones
2 Picasso
4 monet
6 Van Gogh
Great work! I tried to make this one more challenging. For my next post I hope to capture images at all levels. You did good though!
1. Cezane 2. Picasso 3. ? 4. Munch 5.? 6. Van Gogh 7. Magritte (I love this painting) 8. Picasso 9. Seurat 10. ?

1. Cezanne 2. Picasso 3. Rousseau 4. Munch 5. Dali ? 6. Van Gogh 7. Magritte 8. Modigliani 9. Seurat 10. Monet
Almost!
Is No.10 Anselm Kiefer? It doesn’t seem like his color palette but the paint texture looks like some of his work. No. 5 I have no idea about, but for all the others I had the same guesses as Erin.
Not quite but great guesses!
You’re making me stretch my skills a bit after 8 months of no art history courses!
1. Cezanne 2. Picasso 3. Rousseau 4. Munch 5. Braque? 6. Van Gogh 7. Magritte 8. Gauguin? (But Maybe De Kooning or even Kirchner) 9.Seurat and 10. Monet? my guess based on the way the canvas is divided yet continues on – although I am surprised about the amount of texture but I have yet to see a Monet in person.
Hi! I’m very sure about #8 (Modigliani) and #10 (Monet). The latter is part of his famous Water Lilies tryptich. I’m a MoMA member and have seen it many times. But #5 is a guess. Picture looks 3D like painted plastic, so I thought “soft sculpture,” thus Oldenburg. Looking forward to seeing the answers posted!
Oldenburg is one of my favorites. But keep guessing!
Thought for sure you would get #8! Great guesses though! What I thought would mess people up on 10 ended up helping you
I would say #5 is Brancusi?
Maybe!
1. Cezanne, 2. Picasso, 3. Rousseau, 4. Munch, 5. DeKooning, 6. VanGogh, 7. Magritte, 8. Modigliani, 9. Seurat, 10. Monet

This is along shot but is No. 5 Siquieros?
Good guess! I can see how you might think that.
1 Cezanne
2 Picasso
3 Rousseau
4 Munch
5 DuChamp
6 Van Gogh
7 Magritte
8 Modigliani
9 Seurat
10 Monet
The only one I am unsure of is 5.
That’s one of the tricky ones
1. Cezanne
2. Picasso
3. Rousseau
4. Munch
5. Manet
6. Van Gogh
7. Margeritte
8. Modigliani
9. Seurat
10. Monet
That’s close!
Im revising my choice – instead of mondrian i will definately say Modligani (i meant Modligani but couldn’t remember the name) and instead of pollock i will go for Monet. I have seen someone say 5 is Brancuzi and i nearly went for the same, but i will hold out and say Caillebot.
Good change! Though you might want to second guess the Caillebot
1. Cezanne
2. Picasso
3. Gaugin
4. Munch
5. Man Ray
6. Van Gogh
7. Magritte
8. Modigliani
9. Seurat

1. Cezanne 2. Picasso 3. Rousseau 4. Munch 5. Brancusi 6. Van Gogh 7. Magritte 8. Modigliani 9. Seurat 10. Monet
(:
Great work!
